Cambridge music historian Warren Dosanjh notes the group was put together by Jones and Fulcher after they met up with Big John Phillips at his home in Cherry Hinton and start out as Martin & The Swinging Hi Fi’s. Jonathan Phillips, son of drummer John Phillips said, “As well as playing in the band my dad would also book bands to play at The Victoria Ballroom and other venues; he would book the main act and the local support.” Carling said, “I joined the band after I left The Sundowners. At that time we were then going out as Johnny R&B Phillips & The Swinging Hi Fi’s. We did do some recording at Granta Studios but I’ve since misplaced my disc. I left around 1964/5 to join Wages Of Sin.” According to Jones the band later evolved into the group Blue Beat 64.
