Ian Eves was a 15 year old schoolboy and at Downham Secondary Modern when he used to follow brother Danny, 3 years his senior play on the local music circuit who was Keyboard player with The Tuxedos. Ian would often get up and join the group on vocals for a number or two until being asked by local bass player Vic Cooper to join his small outfit The Fenmen in 1962, along with Steve Henry on percussion. The Fenmen had only played a handful of gigs before linking up with ex Strollers guitarist Derrick Bruntone to form Ian Eves & The Bruntones. The group became circuit regulars and would often doubled bill with his brothers new band The Strollers. In 196? Derrick left to form The Drumbeats and was replaced by Tony Cator of The Zodiacs. However Tony soon moved on to link up with Derek Bruntone in The Drumbeats. In May 1964 the group expanded to a five piece by adding ex Electrons guitar duo Mike Barber & Jim Baldwin. It was this line-up of the band that performed at the Wellington Pier in Lowestoft in what was the live! Version of Huey Greens Opportunity Knocks performing PJ Probys hit Hold Me. In January 1965 the groups line-up changed once again when Mike and Jim left the group to joined The Weevils Folk Group, the band then employed the guitar skills of ex (Broker?) Edward Bim Dimmock better known as Johnny Gold. The band continued to impress audiences and in doing so in mid 1965 enticed Ian Eves to switch camps from Stroller to Bruntone. It was this ultimate line up that won round seven of the Norwich Mercury Beat Contest at the Diss corn exchange on June 1st 1965 and then coming second overall in the grand final at the Norfolk Show ground in July 1965. Only months after this that both The Strollers and The Bruntones amalgamated to become Sounds Reformed
