Lead Vocals, Guitar: Graham Fulcher (2)Keith Artis
Guitar: Alan Cannell
Guitar: Tony Powles
Bass: Bobby Secker
Drums: Tony Powles > Guit (2)Hilson Hatley (3)Trevor Lincoln
Formed by Cannell and Fulcher in May 1961.Tony Powles joined straight from his days at Costessy secondary modern and was at first the groups stand in drummer. Lead vocalist Graham Fulcher was quick to point out that much of the bands success was down to having a hard working manager, he was of course in this instance referring to Billy Youngman the groups own manager.
The group hit peak popularity after beating 50 other local acts to win top prize of £50 at a talent contest held at the Federation Club, Oak Street (Now The Talk) in Norwich. Judged by amongst others Anglia TV’s Peter Fenn. Only months later they came second to a band called The Contours in a simular contest held at the Samson & Hercules, Tombland, Norwich. Changes in personnel saw Keith Artist take over on lead vocals, shortly followed by the replacement of Hilson Hatley on drums by Trevor Lincoln, Hilson went on to join The Contours which left the Highwaymen to transform into 13th Hour
Cannell in 2013: Why the band dressed like Johnny Kidd & The Pirates: "Ye Highwaymen played several gigs with Johnny and The Pirates and we were all in awe of them at the time, hence the gear. Bobby was my school mate and remained my mate till his untimely death , I miss him lots.."
